Wow your experience is so similar to mine it's almost uncanny! Unfortunately in my particular case, the company I was dealing with re-sent them and prepaid the brokerage (I have NO idea why they did this) - however they did, and the issue is a closed one for myself.

UPS sucks - when they have their own brokerage they are free to charge anything they like! It's ludicrous and stupid.. I don't understand how they get away with it.

I will seek advice to understand if these UPS practices are legal:

1. I refused the package and requested that you return it to the sender. I will get information to understand if you are obliged to return it to sender as I requested, or if you can legally hold the package hostage until you get paid.

2. When I refused to pay roughly $60 COD, a weekly later UPS tried to deliver it again at a cost of roughly $35. I checked the bill and the taxes for revenue Canada were removed. This as far as I’m concerned is a scam to give me the perception the costs were reduced so I accept the package, later realizing that I owe the remaining to Revenue Canada. I refused the package a second time.

3. As a result of #2, you are now calling me repeatedly (dialler) to make arrangements to pay the taxes on an item that was not delivered.

Gary as I stated before this package was requested to be abandoned by Marlene Houston on April 9, 2010. I can attempt to ask Canada to have this package returned to you. As per Canada policy once a package has been abandoned they will not retrieve it, but I will ask if they will return this package. If I succeed in getting this package returned to you it will be at a cost of approximately $75.49 USD. Please let me know if you are willing to pay the charges to get this package returned, and I will contact UPS Canada to see if they will even retrieve it and then I'll be able to give you a more definite amount on the charge to have this package returned. You need to let me know as soon as possible, and I will try to get Canada to retrieve your package. There is no guarantee that this will be done, but I will ask.

Hi, I did not get a response.

1. WHERE was this package “Abandoned” and why was it not returned to the sender as requested? Is this even legal for you to keep a package that is not delivered? I want this package (GPS) to go back to the sender (Navigon) so they could ship it via USPS for a fraction of the cost.

2. Why do I keep getting recorded calls from UPS that I need to call you and make payment on this package that I refused?

Please confirm when:

1. The package was shipped back to Navigon

2. You remove me from your dialling list; I do not owe any money.

Hi Lynne,

The shipping address was correct. I refused the package due to the UPS brokerage fees of $60.80 on a $150 item (which is not even a new purchase but rather an item returned for repair). I requested through Navigon that they ship the item via USPS instead. When you say ‘this package will be abandoned’, I hope you mean it will be returned to the sender as I had requested.

Hey Tim!

Your idea is awesome.. although.. hmm.. $1200 a year for the both of you to go to the Carribean.. who the hell is your travel broker?? :P Your idea for an 'adult trip' is also a great one I think, but seeing that I don't have kids I guess I have nothing to compare it to.

The car debate is one which a lot of people feel strongly about, but I know that it certainly is likely the first thing people think when they see a nice one .."they must have money or a great job", and it's not always the case... I want to upgrade to that Mercedez!!

Yeah, I don't know what I'm going to do with all that tomato paste, I actually went back and got another 30 and they were very greatful at the Upper Room when I dropped it off.

Hey Len,

I like this post and I think you're right that it all depends on your priorities. I am not that into the kind of car I drive and am comfortable with an older model that is well-maintained. I'm one of those parents with 3 kids, however I put $100 off of each pay into a savings bond which allows my wife & I to have our "adult trip" each year time permitting. I might be driving an older car, but I have visited most Carribean countries and have great memories and photos and adventures because of it.

There is no right or wrong here, just a different ordering of priorities.

I'd prefer to travel. However to vent a little, I'm annoyed by the parents with 3 kids that complain how much money I must have to be able to travel once or twice a year. I'd be willing to bet I spend less then they do raising a family.

It's all about priorities, life style and where we spend money and more importantly, where we do not spend it. A quote I'll never forget was one saying that those that look rich, are probably in debt and those that don't look rich, could very well be.

My daughter, Michelle who lives in London England was visiting me in Charlottetown a few weeks ago. I have wanted a little dog for compionship for such a long time and since I have recently retired from the Air Force, now was the best time. Michelle went on Kijjii one day and found an eight year old Tibetian Spaniel who apparently was a show dog and registered with CKC. Anyway I was told that the previous owners had tried to breed her and she "did not take" so therefore she was of no use anymore. Thanks to Michelle I have Gracie who is an amazing,sweet little girl. She loves to go for walks, car rides, treats and makes me laugh everyday. I took her into AVC to get spayed and found out she has kidney problems. She has brought so much happiness into my life and I hope I can give as much back to her, depending how long I have with her

My dog Lucy is one of my closest friends. She has been with me for the last 6 years and I really do feel blessed to have her in my life. A few years ago I was going through a particularly hard time and she'd stay by me, not leaving my side. She'd look at me with those human eyes of hers and I'd feel reassured that we would get through things together. Her eternal optimism never fails to make me smile. Even after 6 years, when we go to the beach, she is convinced she will catch a seagull. Oh to think more like a dog...

My wife and I were on the deck 3 summers ago, one day before our wedding anniversary. Two young girls walked by and asked us if we'd like to have a puppy, he was 3 months old at the time. They said if they couldn't find a home for him he was going to the pound the next day, they couldn't keep him because of allergies.

We were happy to take him and he's been a joy to have ever since. He's the most playful, friendliest dog you've ever seen. And if you meet him, and he likes you (he likes everybody), he'll show you all of his toys. He starts bringing them all out and putting them at your feet.
